Learning to Evaluate Risk on the Internet

So I thought you would be interested to know we take seriously at Pebble Brook school the educating of pupils to use the internet carefully evaluating the risks involved. Mind you it still looks like this one 'facebook friended' their teacher -- that has to be a dodgy thing to do.

Kate, thank you for your lead and input into this area. It is quite clearly the right way to go, although as you say we do have some deciding what actually is the right way to go. A small point of fact the original meeting was less than two weeks ago as I remember -- some would say we are making good progress already. :-)

Pupil Evangelists: Spreading the Word

There has been a lot of talk in recent years about digital safety. It is not surprising really given the heavy involvement of pornographers in the commercialisation of the internet hinted at by articles such as "This Is A Naked Lady" -- Behind every new technology is...sex? (in Wired Mar/Apr 1993) and documented more fully in the Encyclopedia Britannica and The Economist, in particular "Sex and the internet -- devices and desires".

However time does not stand still and forward looking educators like Steve Hargadon are now working to change the system (in Web 2.0 Is the Future of Education (Techlearning blog)):

'We've spent the last ten years teaching students how to protect themselves from inappropriate content – now we have to teach them to create appropriate content. They may be "digital natives," but their knowledge is surface level, and they desperately need training in real thinking skills.'
