In case you are wondering why the red face picture today and tomorrow I just heard this red alert from a friend of a friend in South Africa. In many ways I hope it isn't true as it sounds a hugely risky thing for anyone to do in that part of the world at the present time. But I am finding corroborating evidence as I write and in any case I thought Aylesbury LIFE, and perhaps my Facebook friends, could at least stand in solidarity even if in massively greater comfort and safety.

"Just heard via the grapevine that there is a campaign starting in Zimbabwe today, and of course for tomorrow Friday, 27 June 2008, to try and get everyone in Zim to bring out and display the colour RED (MDC campaign colour) and literally paint the towns red as a symbolic protest at the sham election.

"Activists will get things started by tying red ribbons on everything in sight; they are hoping to encourage the whole population to join in. They are hoping that people will boycott the polling stations but fling red around everywhere instead on Friday. People need to get hold of anything red and spread it around the town: e.g. wear red, festoon the trees on the side of the road with red rags, red balloons, red plastic bags - or cut out red paper or card and paste these everywhere...

"Other ideas inlcude - graffiti red spray paint 'V' for victory, chuck red poster paint condom bombs, draw red lipstick V on shop windows, on police cars, in ladies' loos (especially in government department loos), and so on.

"They are hoping this will be picked up by news teams and cameras. "
